Both concepts relate to European travel and short stays, but they solve different problems. ETIAS is about a future pre-travel authorisation step for some travellers, while EES is about border-side entry and exit recording in participating contexts.
| Topic | ETIAS | EES |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A planned travel authorisation for some visa-exempt short-stay travellers. | An entry/exit border system for certain short-stay travellers. |
| Is it a visa? | No. | No. |
| When it matters | Before eligible travel, once operational. | At participating border crossings during travel. |
| What it may involve | Pre-travel authorisation rules and checks. | Entry/exit registration and sometimes biometric checks. |
